KOC Halloween

“A relative newcomer to Lincoln Park, King of Cups plans to go hard for the royalty-themed cocktail bar’s first Halloween season. Its “Seven Ways To Die” celebration runs through November 11 featuring “haunting vignettes” depicting the various bizarre deaths of royalty, as well as tarot card readings and $12 spooky drinks. These include “the Underworld” (blanco tequila, Pimms, carrot, lemon, egg white, soda, cinnamon) and the “7 Deadly Sins” (bourbon, Malort, house-made candy corn syrup, lemon, soda, sea salt).”

“A Majestic Cocktail Lounge With a Royal Throne Opens in Lincoln Park” – Chicago Eater

IMG 6851

Royalty-themed Rococo cocktail lounge King of Cups opens today in Lincoln Park at 2238 N. Lincoln Avenue, with an eclectic cocktail menu, over-the-top decor, and a suit of armor. Father-son team Dino and Brandon Vulpitta, who also own Brando’s Speakeasy in the South Loop, and collaborator Taylor Kravitt hope to keep drinkers in the neighborhood with an experience that stands out from the crowd of neighborhood sports bars and taverns.

King of Cups’ decor makes a statement: candelabras and busts stand on the long, dark wood bar and maroon fabric draped regally overhead softens the metal fixtures and exposed brick wall that backs it. Gilded chandeliers hang from the ceiling and cozy-looking leather booths and banquettes fill out the intimate 1,000 square-foot space that seats 60. An elevated throne along a side wall faces the bar, flanked by a full suit of armor. Elaborate framed portraits and monitors feature royals — by blood or fame — including “the King” Elvis, Queen Victoria, and interplanetary prince David Bowie.

Festivities begin tonight and will continue beyond grand opening weekend, which includes burlesque performances, live music, and tarot readings. Paranormal researcher, medium, and television personality Chris Fleming (son of Chicago Blackhawks player Reggie Fleming) will make an appearance at King of Cups on Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and has plans to drop in around 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Owners describe the cocktail list as “approachable,” and hope it appeals to both newbies and connoisseurs. 20 drinks named for performers and local industry figures make up the detailed menu — “Smerch’s Swizzle” honors the space’s original owner Bob Smerch, the self-proclaimed “king of dive bars.” Drinks cost $12 each and Vulpitta said larger cocktails for two-to-four people are coming soon for a few more ducats, and has plans to add a zero-proof cocktail list at the end May. King of Cups will not serve food.

“The Best Bars in Chicago Right Now”- Thrillist

This delightfully weird “spirits lounge” offers a much-needed respite from the same-old sports bars and charmless frat bro haunts that have long dominated Lincoln Park’s main drag. With nightly tarot card readings, a royal throne flanked by a suit of armor, fancy chandeliers, and framed portraits of folks like Elvis and Bowie, the space certainly has a flare for the dramatic. Grab some wine on tap, large-format cocktails (which they call “king size”), or drafts from 3 Floyds and Dovetail as you marvel at the royalty-themed space that carries more than a passing resemblance to something out of Game of Thrones. Drinks include the Grand Poobah (vodka, aloe liqueur, watermelon, lime, mint), the Boss Daley with rye whiskey, apple brandy, and sweet vermouth, and the tiki-style Tuff Gong packed with three types of rum.

“King of Cups Now Open in Lincoln Park” – CFM

King of Cups has announced its grand opening on July 23rd in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The bar, owned by the father-son duo of Dino and Brandon Vulpitta, is located at 2238 N. Lincoln Ave and embraces a mystical theme with tarot card readers, weekly entertainment, and a cocktail program.

“I’ve been to nightlife and cocktail bar destinations across four continents and dozens of countries,” says the older Vulpitta. “What I’ve learned is that unique experiences are more memorable than the things I bought or ate. That’s what we’ve recreated here; a new and refreshing take to Chicago’s cocktail scene that welcomes anyone looking to have a good drink and a good time that they won’t forget.”

The 33-year Chicago hospitality veteran is no stranger to serving up memories for a variety of guests. He has worked in the nightclub industry since the late 90s, taking hosting jobs at clubs like the Limelight and working with big names like Dennis Rodman to resurrect burlesque establishments.

Brandon, the younger Vulpitta, also shares his father’s passion for creating nightlife experiences. The duo also runs Brando’s Speakeasy, a karaoke lounge located in the South Loop. “At King of Cups, we’ve tried to preserve the eclectic atmosphere of its predecessor, Sterch’s, which hosted iconic locals like Roger Ebert and Helen Hunt,” says Brandon. “To continue that legacy, we’re committed to bringing world-class service to Chicago nightlife in a smaller, more accessible venue.”

The crafted cocktails offer fresh ingredients crushed, mixed, and served with housemade syrups and bitters. The $12 cocktail menu features bar favorites like:

  • Maximillian the Imposter: Banana infused mezcal, bourbon, PX Sherry, chocolate bitters, angostura bitters, applewood smoke
  • Grand Poobah: vodka, Chareau, watermelon, lime, mint
  • Rococo Rush: coconut washed rum, chardonnay, demerara, tiki bitters, absinthe rinse, toasted coconut rim
  • King of Make Believe: silver mezcal, Cointreau, lime, bell pepper (optional spice level).

The menu is a collaborative effort between the Vulpittas and the beverage director, Daniel Jahnke. For Daniel, who has worked at Chicago bars such as Drumbar, Bar Sotano, and LondonHouse. “The menu has something for everyone,” said Jahnke. “Drink novices, party drinkers, and even cocktail connoisseurs can expect to find recognizable, fresh, and balanced ingredients in every cocktail.”

King of Cups is open on Wednesdays-Fridays from 5 p.m. – 2 a.m., Saturdays from 6 p.m. – 3 a.m. and Sundays from 6 p.m. – 2 a.m. Tarot readings are available every day for $15 from 7 p.m. – 12 a.m. and are complimentary on Fridays. On Saturdays, guests can expect a “midnight mystery” to spice up the night. On the first Thursday of each new zodiac month, not only will new zodiac drink specials hit the menu but those of the month’s sign can receive a free tarot reading and chalice.

“Chicago’s King of Cups Is the Epitome of Adulting at Halloween”- BethDelany.com

Skull scaled

“While other bars are hosting kitschy pop-up experiences and campy Halloween deals, King of Cups in Lincoln Park is a year-round romantically dark and mystic libation station. Considering the extra chilling time of year, the medieval-meets-upscale bar at 2238 N. Lincoln is boasting a menu of charmingly potent concoctions designed by celebrated beverage director Daniel Jahnke. Unique mixtures like The Posh Tosh made with CBD flowers and rum fire, 7 Deadly Sins made with candy corn syrup and Malort and The Underworld made with egg whites and blanco tequila are available to order through November 8th.”

While patrons have a few more weeks to sip on Jahnke’s carefully crafted cocktails, King of Cups exhibits unforgettable happenings no matter the season. Nightly tarot card readings and an intimately adorned bar are sure to create memorable antics amongst friends and frequenters alike.

It’s not easy to find city gems like this one. And when you do, it’s a real treat.”
